High Dynamic Range Photo

I thought I'd share a high dynamic range image (HDR) which is made from several exposures, processed through a special photo application. The detail can be exceptional.

Getting back into things...

It's been way too long since I updated this blog. Things have changed over the past months. Kristina is away at college (Bryn Mawr), Nicholas is doing great things with pottery, and I have reignited my bike riding frenzy. More on all these things soon.

Arizona sunrise

Greetings from Tucson, Arizona.  I am on vacation for a few days.  Here are two images of the mountains and the desert in the area taken with my delightful D700. 

Not infrequently my daughter (18) gets the urge to indulge in photography. She uses a Nikon D40 and is pretty good with basic photoshop. She has some fine images at her site, worth checking out.

When combining images I try to create a translucent blending of form and light. Here I have used a sunset image (from my backyard a couple years ago) with a window frame from a London apartment building. Careful use of layer masking allowed for a feathering of the blend. Do you think it works? by the way I am enjoying my Nikon D700. Way cool.

Butterfly on Peacock Feather

A fall butterfly that we brought indoors.

This photo was taken a few years ago at the Elkhorn Ranch in souther Arizona (near Tucson). The ranch wranglers had brought in the 30 horses that free range over night. The early morning side light was soft and the horse was patient.  It was at the end of about an hour of shooting. Taken with a Nikon D100 and an 18-70 mm zoom.

This blog is about photography, how light and the right opportunity can work together to achive great photographic results. Photography is very personal but can be very moving.

I shoot with Nikon digital gear and process photos with a Mac using Photoshop CS3. I teach photoshop at Clark University in Worcester, MA, and it is a pleasure passing along not only the techniques, but insight into how to create a good image to start with.
